Overview
What Is Deformity Correction?
Foot and ankle deformities—whether congenital (since birth) or acquired due to injury, arthritis, or neuromuscular conditions—can lead to imbalance, altered gait, difficulty walking, shoe-wear problems, and chronic pain. Deformity correction aims to restore proper alignment, stability, and function of the foot and ankle using modern surgical and non-surgical techniques.
Common Deformities Treated
We provide comprehensive care for a wide range of deformities, including:
- Flatfoot (PCFD / AAFD).
- Cavus Foot (high arch deformity).
- Limb Malalignment (varus, valgus, rotational deformities).
- Congenital Foot & Ankle Deformities (present since birth).
- Toe Deformities (hammer toe, claw toe, crossover toe).
- Post-traumatic deformities of the foot and ankle.
- Deformities secondary to neuromuscular disorders
.
Treatment Options
Osteotomies
- Bone-cutting procedures to realign abnormal angles and restore natural biomechanics.
- Soft Tissue Balancing.
- Tendon transfers, ligament repairs, or releases to correct muscle imbalance and improve joint stability.
- Fusion Procedures.
- Used for severe arthritis or rigidity. Fusing specific joints provides pain relief and long-term stability.
- Ilizarov / External Fixation
- Complex deformities.
- Multi-planar corrections.
- Limb lengthening.
- Deformity correction in cases unfit for internal fixation
Allows gradual and highly accurate correction using an external frame.
Procedure Details
How Do I Prepare for Deformity Correction Surgery?
- Detailed evaluation with clinical examination, X-rays, and sometimes CT scans.
- 3D planning for complex deformities.
- Review of medical history and medications.
- Pre-operative physiotherapy to strengthen surrounding muscles.
- Smoking cessation for improved healing.
- Counselling regarding postoperative care, weight-bearing restrictions, and frame management (if using Ilizarov).
What Happens During This Procedure?
The exact steps depend on the deformity and procedure chosen, but may include:
- Surgery under regional or general anesthesia.
- Bone cuts (osteotomies) to realign the foot or ankle.
- Soft tissue procedures (tendon transfers, ligament releases/repairs).
- Fixation using screws, plates, rods or external frames.
- If using Ilizarov, a circular frame is applied for gradual correction.
- Wound closure and application of cast/boot/splint.
What Happens After This Procedure?
- Hospital stay of 2-3 days depending on procedure complexity.
- Pain control and swelling reduction measures.
- Cast, boot, or external frame care instructions.
- Weight-bearing depends on the type of correction (often restricted initially).
- Regular X-rays to monitor healing and alignment.
- Physiotherapy begins gradually to restore strength and mobility.
- If Ilizarov is used, adjustments are guided by your surgeon.
How Long Is Recovery After This Procedure?
- Initial healing: 6–8 weeks
- Full recovery: 3–6 months (varies by deformity and procedure).
- Recovery may be longer for complex or multi-planar corrections.
- Most patients achieve significant functional improvement and pain relief.
When Should I Call My Healthcare Provider After This Procedure?
Contact your surgeon if you experience:
- Increased pain, redness, or abnormal swelling.
- Fever or chills.
- Numbness or inability to move toes or ankle.
- Excessive discharge from the wound or pin sites.
- Loosening of external fixator components.
- Issues with cast/boot or difficulty walking beyond expected levels.
