What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is one of the most common causes of heel pain. It occurs due to inflammation or microtears in the plantar fascia, a thick band of tissue supporting the arch of the foot.

Patients typically experience stabbing heel pain, especially with the first few steps in the morning or after periods of rest.

Symptoms That May Indicate You Need Treatment

  • Sharp heel pain when getting out of bed or after sitting for long.
  • Pain during standing or walking.
  • Tenderness under the heel.
  • Tightness in the calf muscles.
  • Pain that worsens with prolonged activity.

Treatment Options

  • Stretching Exercises.
    • Calf stretches.
    • Plantar fascia stretches.
    • Essential to improve flexibility and reduce tension.
  • Customised Insoles.
    • Support the arch, reduce heel pressure, and improve foot alignment.
  • Shockwave Therapy.
    • Non-surgical treatment that stimulates healing of chronic plantar fasciitis.
  • PRP Injections / Drilling.
    • Useful for chronic cases not responding to conservative care.
    • Promotes natural healing.
    • Drilling stimulates new blood supply to the fascia.
  • Endoscopic Fasciotomy (Rarely Needed).
    • A minimally invasive surgical option for very resistant cases to release tight fascia.

Procedure Details

How Do I Prepare for Endoscopic Plantar Fasciotomy / PRP / Drilling?

  • Clinical evaluation and imaging (X-ray/ultrasound) if required.
  • Review of current medications and conditions.
  • Pre-procedure advice on footwear and stretching.
  • Understanding postoperative restrictions.
  • No smoking for better tissue healing.

What Happens During This Procedure?

Depends on the treatment type:

  • PRP Injection.
    • Blood is drawn and processed to isolate platelets.
    • Injected into the painful area under ultrasound guidance.
  • Drilling.
    • Small drill holes are made in the heel bone to stimulate healing.
  • Endoscopic Fasciotomy.
    • Performed under local or regional anesthesia.
    • A tiny incision is made on the inner side of the heel.
    • A small endoscope is used to release part of the tight plantar fascia.
    • Very minimal tissue damage and faster recovery.
