About
Overview
Percutaneous proximal femoral nailing
Percutaneous proximal femoral nailing is a minimally invasive technique used for treating intertrochanteric fractures. It involves inserting a nail through small incisions, reducing soft tissue damage and blood loss compared to traditional open surgery.
Procedure Details
The procedure is performed under fluoroscopic guidance. A small incision is made near the greater trochanter, and a guide wire is inserted into the femoral canal. The nail is then passed over the guide wire and advanced into the femur, with a locking screw or blade placed into the femoral head to secure the fracture. The small incisions and percutaneous approach minimize tissue disruption and allow for faster recovery.
Benefits
Percutaneous proximal femoral nailing offers several advantages:
- Reduced surgical time and blood loss.
- Lower risk of infection and soft tissue complications.
- Early postoperative mobilization and improved functional outcomes.
- Minimally invasive nature supports quicker recovery compared to open techniques.
Recovery Time
Most patients can begin weight-bearing soon after surgery, with full recovery and return to normal activities typically taking 3 to 6 months. Physical therapy is started early to aid rehabilitation.
Percutaneous proximal femoral nailing is an effective and reliable method for intertrochanteric fractures, offering significant benefits in terms of recovery and reduced complications.
